NATIONAL SUICIDE AND CRISIS LIFELINE

“988 has been designated as the new three-digit dialing code that will route callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (now known as the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), and is now active across the United States. When people call, text, or chat 988, they will be connected to trained counselors that are part of the existing Lifeline network. These trained counselors will listen, understand how their problems are affecting them, provide support, and connect them to resources if necessary.”

1. Look around - what can you see that is letting you know you are safe? Perhaps your pet, a coup of tea, your favorite book, a plant, an open door…

2. Listen - what can you hear that is letting you know you are safe? Perhaps some street noise, birds, wind, music, people talking, your cat snoring…

3. Feel - what can you touch that is letting you know you are safe? Perhaps a soft blanket, a splash of cool water on your face, a warm cup of tea or coffee…

4. Smell - what can you smell that is letting you know you are safe? Perhaps your tea or coffee, clean laundry, soothing essential oils…

5. Taste - what can you taste that is letting you know you are safe? Perhaps a sip of cool water or a mint…


CONNECT

1. With yourself: Remind yourself that this feeling will pass. You can ride it like a wave. You will be ok.

2. With others: Call or text your favorite person. No, they are not too busy. Yes, they care. If they don’t answer right away, leave them a message and be honest about how you’re feeling and what you need.

3. With the world: Go for a walk outside. Take in the sights, sounds, scents, and sensations. Remember your place in the family of things.
